All the dwellings are designed with no more than two storeys and always with flat roofs, just like the shops and other structures, to emphasis the clean and strict layout of the village. This is still true for new dwellings being built within the village today. Vid=sible in the background of most of these photos is a wall of trees, part of the original design and created as both a nod to ancient settlements and their walls and as a way to break the wind that has free reign in a landscape as flat as the Noordoostpolder.
